New Survey: Hair Restoration Procedures Increased 11%

According to statistics released from a recent member survey conducted by the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) – the world’s leading medical authority on hair loss and hair restoration – lackluster worldwide economic growth in 2010 did not put the brakes on the number of people investing in hair restoration surgery to treat hair loss.

Approximately 279, 381 hair restoration procedures were performed worldwide in 2010, up 11 percent from 2008. This increase coincides with a significant jump in the total number of hair restoration patients worldwide – from 811,363 patients in 2008 to 923,599 patients in 2010.

Hair is an integral part of our identity, and hair loss has been shown to have a negative impact on a person’s overall quality of life. Whether you are looking for an edge in the workplace or more satisfaction in your personal life, hair restoration surgery offers the inherent benefits of looking younger and feeling more self confident that many people are finding is well worth the investment.

While some might think that only older men are undergoing hair restoration surgery, the survey found that the majority (83 percent) of first-time hair restoration patients in 2010 were between 30 and 49 years old. In addition, although the majority of hair restoration patients are men, women are increasingly seeking help for hair loss. In 2010, 85.9 percent of all hair restoration surgical patients worldwide were male and 14.1 percent were female. Since 2004, the number of female surgical hair restoration patients worldwide increased 24 percent.

Exciting News in Skin Renewal and Restoration

In the world of lasers, ever more interesting and new (or updated) devices are being brought to market every year. The most exciting thing in the world of lasers is fractional laser treatments for skin tightening, wrinkles, and skin surface improvement of the face and neck.

Basically, the fractional lasers work at light-wave lengths of about 1540, 2940, and 10,800. Additional wave lengths are coming along as well. The 1540 wave-lengths provide a non-ablative fractional treatment. Both the 2940 and 10,800 provide an ablative fractional treatment. The latter is the C02 laser which is strong and effective, but provides a little bit more heat to the skin. I’ve personally had the 2940 and the 10,800 treatments over the last few years, and I’ve noted that (in my case), the effects have been about the same.

“Fractional” means that only a fraction of the postage-stamp-sized head of the laser actually shoots the light beam into the skin in the form of about 200 or 300 columns of light. These columns of light pierce the skin, making little holes in the dermis. These dermal holes heal fairly quickly over several days, and when they do, contraction gradually occurs in the skin. The contraction diminishes wrinkles and loose skin quite nicely. In addition, the ablative wave lengths also peel off the outer layers of the skin, much like an old dermabrasion used to do when I was a resident. The laser has various controls so that it can be tuned to each person’s individual skin for the best effect. The Sciton brand is the type of laser that my associate in our office uses and prefers (and she has certainly done the research required to make the best most informed decision in terms of patient satisfaction, efficacy and safety). In fact, my fiancé and her sister are both planning to have a treatment in the 2940 wave length soon. For more detailed information on the various wave lengths and their effects, consult the Sciton medical website as well as keep an eye on my blog for additional information over the coming weeks.

Amp Up Your Current Ageless Skin Treatments

A new study by dermatologist, Joel Schlessinger, M.D. of Omaha, reports that by using a specially designed 4% hydroquinone system (which also includes tretinoin), suggests that there are potentiated enhancements and improvements in the skin’s appearance when used as an adjunct to Botox injections. According to the study, the combination of hydroquinone plus tretinoin may lessen both fine lines/wrinkles and hyperpigmentation, as compared to standard skin care products or when used individually. For those who are diffident about the use of hydroquinone, there are a number of alternative products available on the market at this time. So for the Botox users out there, there are indeed some new topics to discuss with your dermatologist or cosmetic/plastic surgeon. For information on non-prescription items (retinols and alternatives to hydroquinone), visit Skincare-News.com.

Wine, Pebble Beach and Double the Density

We returned a week or so ago from the Pebble Beach car weekend. It was an excellent time with many great perfectly-restored classic cars and many social events. Before going to Pebble Beach, we did an interesting case in the San Francisco office on a vintager from Napa Valley. He was also nice enough to bring along ten cases of an excellent pinot noir. The case consisted of the second hair transplant procedure after two years. The first procedure consisted of about 3000 grafts, which had grown out very nicely. We decided to do a second procedure, placing the grafts in between the first ones to double the density of what was originally substantial full-head baldness. It is typical when transplanting a large area of baldness to do two procedures, one to two years apart. It has been my experience that trying to do only one procedure will either compromise the density, or the area. With all procedures, almost every surgeon uses maximum density in the hairline area. Check the website for some examples. Also check our blog posting on the logic of cosmetic density.
